Specific criteria such as injuring yourself with your own grenade. Kerry's own book, in his own words says that his own grenade would for the purple heart was self-inflicted.

Since two of Kerry's Purple Hearts appear to be due to self inflicted wounds...he would not have met the criteria......

The self inflicted wounds are not a smear campaign by the right. They are described by Kerry, in Kerry's own words, in Kerry's own book, titled, "Tour of Duty", between pages 300 and 320.
