<<However, to say that the artist has no obligation to deliver a performance product that is within the specs of what was advertised (and therefore expected) is an equally flawed position, imho. This what I interpreted you're comment below to mean:

"The artist is the artist. They are responsible for the content of the performance. You are responsible for whether or not you go.">>

Well if the artist were Andy Kaufman then you really don't have any right to any expectations except to see whatever it is he wants to show you.

But we're talking about concerts and every example involves a concert being given. And again if you don't like the way the concert is given, don't go.

Miles Davis often wouldn't face the crowd when he performed. Some people won't do old material, or won't do new material. Some people play all night, some play short sets. Some people spend more time telling stories (Nina Simone comes to mind) than playing music. Some tell off-color jokes, talk about religion or politics between songs.

I suppose if you bought tickets to a concert and ended up at a time-share presentation this would be about something. But we're talking about buying tickets to a concert and seeing a concert.

You're paying to see that particular artist perform.

Good gravy, man, don't you know that being reasonable is grounds for being banned from this forum? :)

I agree. There is a middle ground. But, I'd prefer not to get an 'unexpected' political statement when being entertained. Ultimately, however, the market adjusts. Lefties don't watch Dennis Miller much anymore, now that he's swung wildly to the right. Righties probably don't go see Springsteen much, either...
