JUST BY WAY OF COMPARISON
By Cori Dauber

I've barely looked at my copy of Tommy Franks' new book.

But as Rich Lowry points out today, the biggest and most obvious revelation from that book, it seems clear, is that the military, as they prepared to take on Saddam, was absolutely convinced he had WMD stocks. (Franks put one general in charge of a "Consequences Management" unit, to prepare the response to their use.) Glenn Reynolds yesterday speculated on the reasons the book has gotten so little attention. I was thinking of the amount of attention it got in direct comparison to the absolute feeding frenzy when Woodward's latest came out. After all, Woodward's book was a secondary work, based on interviews with the principals. Franks was a principal. Now, that means you listen to him with an understanding that he has a motive to spin. But shouldn't what he has to say be at least as interesting as what Woodward has to say?
