Absolutely! There are some good Dem moderates (Tim Roamer, Evan Bayh), but of the major figures are liberals.

It's a shame, because a good moderate candidate would have been a shoe in versus Bush. Now we have to be worried about Mr. Flip Flop.

Is this the best we can do?

Even the fanatics here who labor mightily to hold up the sinking Kerry ship wish, in their hearts, that Kerry was not the man they have to stand by. How much easier their lives would be if it were Joe Lieberman.

I think the primaries have turned out to be bad for the country. They make the nomination an endurance race in which sweat, money, and connections determine the winner. Lieberman could never have stood the pace.

I'm sure the majority of Democratic leaders did not want Kerry. I believe we got a lot better candidates when the winner emerged, choking and gasping, from the smoke-filled hotel room at the convention site. Or when the winner was settled on the 78th ballot after a lot of wheeling and dealing. Over all the years we got some damn fine candidates on both sides.

There's a lot to be said for the old-boy system.
