I think you might have missed that you can buy "assault weapons" right now during the "ban" including high capacity 30 round magazines. Imported magazines without date stamps were never illegal or banned. So to summarize. Assault weapons and magazines are available in large quantities right now. If the "ban" expires, assault weapons and magazines will still be available in large quantitities. The difference is what?

According to the Centers for Disease Control who have the best statistics on deaths in general, between 1999 and 2001, the latest data available, 20,308 people died on avg per year from firearms. The VAST majority were SUICIDES at 16,869. There were 802 accidents, and 892 self defense type by police mostly. Since the vast majority are suicide and drugs related, instead of passing inane laws based on cosmetics it would be better to actually TREAT PEOPLE FOR DEPRESSION AND MENTAL ILLNESS. A lot of those suicides were committed by the elderly. The problem isn't guns, its depression, mental illness and drugs.
