He would have had to leave abruptly. That would either have been terribly rude, or he would have had to explain. The explanation, even if vague, might have frightened the children. He was not just an onlooker, to leave at will.

"When I was a kid people used to enter and leave our classrooms all the time, I can't remember it ever inducing a panic. You probably had the POTUS stopping by all the time didn't you commiefish? This visit might have been perceived by these kids a little differently than the office girl delivering a note! It doesn't matter what he did...you hacks would be condemning it. If he got up, excused himself, and ran out...I can hear it now, "the big chickenhawk soiled himself and scared the hell out those kids by bolting" I feel better about this election knowing that thousands of posts are dedicated to Bush's classroom visit. This indicates a lack of real issues for the Dems.
