Does it matter? Runyon says that two critical pieces: that they were fired upon, and that Kerry was wounded. If he was indeed wounded by fragments from a grenade he threw or shot, it doesn't matter as long as he was attempting to kill the enemy. Runyon certainly thinks so, and he was actually on the boat (unlike the swifties from afar).

Case closed, no?
