That's why I believe in gov giving grants to women's clinics and providing schools with supply of birth control pills. It's the only effective means to curtail unwanted pregnancies among those who would rather spend any available funds on cigarettes, alcohol or drugs rather than on necessary birth control measures. More extreme conservatives argue that the individuals should use self control....that's a sermon-not a realistic solution to the problem.

Carolyn, you are absolutely right. I couldn't have said it as well as you did.

I think what contributes to all that irresponsible behaviour is the "self-esteem" b.s. practiced in lots of N. American schools. Because of it, many students feel too sure about themselves and they impulsively mouth off or act as if they know a lot when they actually don't know enough. By the way, education is not doing well, and American students regularly fared badly in international tests.

The problem of teenage pregnancy was so bad in Detroit schools in the mid 1980s (maybe even now; I haven't checked that out) that the girls were regularly reminded,
"Do yourself a favour; save it for later."
