The Navy needed some gate guards so they created the Marines:) I've been around and used guns all of my life but I can honestly say that on my sub nothing was more terrifying to me then some of those guys with a gun. Every time we did a repel border drill (like that is a big concern anyhow) I would think of throwing myself overboard rather then chance my shipmates with weapons. Of course that is why they didn't give them ammo and why the topside watch stands guard with an unloaded pistol:)
