He took a war the previous Dem President had bungled badly and, in the process of winding it down, turned the Cold War around, leading ultimately to a total (and unexpected) victory for the West. In 1972, amid inflationary shocks and economic chaos, he won over 60% of the popular vote and 49 states against a senator who could best be described as "The First John Kerry". He was later driven from office by a viscous, unpatriotic, domestic enemy. History does not come from a Xerox machine, but much of the key to our future may still be found in our past...
