It takes a great deal of courage to stand in front of the lawmakers including the President and tell them that the policies they were pursuing with regards to Vietnam was wrong. It had nothing to do with the troops themselves. The President and the troops are not one and the same. If this President feels that an attack on him is an attack on the troops then it goes to show how far removed he is from a logical thought process. Similarly attacking Nixon at that time is not the same thing as attacking the troops. Kerry recognized that and he joined the military and not the Nixon military. That is the distinction he made.
