I think Orca has made it clear from his hundreds of whining posts that he's hurting and is trying to save money. To be able to weather a real healthcare storm, which I wouldn't wish on anybody, one has to have some pretty serious assets. I think it's clear that he's one who would plead poverty. Might be wrong.

I had a youthful cousin who was in a serious life support situation after an accident 15 years ago, and in just a few days the medical bills even then were astronomical. I can't imagine what they'd be today. Maybe 6 figures over several days?

OTOH, if he figured "why insure when all I have to do is claim indigent status and not pay a thing", then it's another story.

I don't think that's the case.

Based on his posts, I'd conclude Orca owns a house (who would do a remodel on a rental?).

Based on his posts, I've concluded Orca owns a business.

If Orca or any of his familial pod experiences a health care emergency, and requires significant medical care, the Orca pod will be billed for that care. If they don't pay, the health care provider(s) will turn the matter over to collection. If they continue not to pay, they will be sued. Ultimately, they stand to lose their house, business, and other things of value they have to pay the cost.

You, Laz and I won't be responsible for the cost of their health care.

The ones that we are responsible for are the folks who own no real estate, have no assets to speak of and basically live on the edge.

Assuming he has sufficient assets, Orca is not risking our money and financial security, he's risking his and his family's, and that's a decision for Orca and Mrs. Orca to make.

I don't fault them for that.

Now, if he has only $10,000 equity in his house and his business is in the whole and he has no other significant assets, then he is making the rest of us unwilling participants in his self-insurance plan.
