your exuberance makes me smile. i don't have a deep visceral connection to this but it is interesting to watch it play out, character assassination 101, oldest dirtiest nastiest trick in the book and you are staking your reputation on this, with such pronouncements

Well in this case, the character had it coming, certainly in part. Christmas in Cambodia, sure buddy. The idol with the feet of clay ran with the campaign slogan "Look at my feet!". The swiftvets have been busy scratching off the gold paint and displaying the clay for all to see. Now the idol's in a tough corner.

What's really fascinating is what just happened to the media. (A thousand PhD theses will be born of these weeks). A story came up that was practically the mirror image of the Bush-AWOL story that the media were enthralled with just a few months ago, and they took it up only as a fine lady takes up a dead fish - with extreme reluctance and many cries of disgust. The contrast in handling could not be clearer. The mask is off. What's worse for them, they found they could not avoid it -- they have been forced to put it on the front page against their will.

in your wildest fantasies does this mean he drops out or what, what's the rest of the play like, so to speak.

I fought believing in this for two weeks. It was a classical David/Goliath. They will fight like hell, and they will do the SV's some damage. If they only had the first ad, they might have been able to stop them. But not now. The second ad cannot be refuted. It is nothing but Kerry speaking, and the vet's anguish about what he said. How do you counter there feelings? Call them liars? Won't work.

The key is that now everything the SV's do is front page news all over the country. The more the Kerry Kamp tries to muffle them, the worst they look.

Will Kerry resign? No, they will keep fighting. But it is "fini." The questions now are, how big will Bush's margin be? Can he carry in some more Senators? They are dancing tonight at the Bush HQ.

You will never see a better example of how to handle a political breakout. Two weeks of internet, blogs. small market ads, and cable news. The truth they have is so strong it couldn't be stopped.
