If his writers attack the vets he loses more of his base. imo this move from the beginning was ill advised. he should have stayed with liberal programs, attack cost of war in Iraq. increase taxes on rich and close corp loop holes. He may have had a better change.. but the vietnam war splits his own party. If Bush comes out of convention with a bounce i doubt kerry ever catches up. Kerry's Vietnam will be what destroyed him just the thing he thought would get him the presidency.
