<<A report on "battle damage" to Thurlow's boat mentions "three 30 cal bullet holes about super structure." According to Thurlow, at least one of the bullet holes was the result of action the previous day, when he ran into another Vietcong ambush.>>

They could have missed the other two holes at the end of the previous day depending on what they had to do. Then again they had one boat damaged, Kerry's boat on the run and three boats thinking they were being attacked and pouring out bullets in "return" fire. Even if the VC were 30 miles away I'd expect some hole from friendly fire.

The report says they were at that spot for one and a half hours and the river was only 75 yards wide. That's less than the length of your house from either bank. Under full auto fire that close for an hour and a half. Both sides. Possibly two bullet holes in a boat and none in people?
