Nixon ended it only when he couldn't bomb the North into submission.

Not quite! That "I-am-not-a-crook" Nixon continued to bomb North Vietnamese positions while having Kissinger to negotiate for peace with Le Duc Tho in Paris. The bombings and negotiations went on at the same time.

I guess one of the objectives was to get Ho Chi Minh killed. But that did not happen.

Finally when General Giap got increasingly stronger and was ready to push toward Saigon, an "honorable withdrawal" was successfully negotiated.

It turned out the Americans were forced to scurry out. Big Rush, rush and rush to get out before the North Vietnamese got into Saigon.
