Oh, we are an empire for sure. No doubt about that anymore. The empire thing has been creeping up upon us for years. When we go off and attack another country that never attacked us, and then try to occupy it, that's a sure sign that we're indeed an empire. But, who benefits from our empire? The same old characters at the top. Empires have their masters and their servants.

If Kerry wins and actually is able to get us to start focusing on energy independence instead of wars for oil, perhaps we can start thinking of moving beyond the empire model. It is our need for oil that drives our empire building ways. If average Americans aren't happy with our oil empire, we can do things to fight the system by switching to alternative or more efficient energies.
