Unfortunately we can't just pump vegetable oils out of the ground, like oil. We have to grow them and use fertilizer inputs and harvest them, not so conveniently as oil. One advantage is that their combustion products are less toxic than those of ordinary diesel fuel. But we thus far we can't get even palm oil, the cheapest vegetable oil, at a price close to that of the black oil. I don't know the current numbers exactly. I think that while we don't have a product as cheap as oil, probably you are basically right in that we need to use vegetable oil as a replacement for petroleum. Someone once estimated that renewable sources, including vegetable oils, could well sustain a global population of the order of a billion. Maybe we have to study the oil palms and get strains through generations of selection, that have the highest productivity, for a given input of fertilizer and water.

alernative for oil is not only car fuel. Malcom is right since he thinks beyond need for powering cars. People who leave in cold climates don't even realize the life supporting system they need to keep alive in inhospitable places. Not only cold but also hot. A high energy price will have an impact in human geography. People will desert Phoenix, Arizona and Anchorage, Alaska. Leaving at southern latitudes will become cheaper.
