At that time, many of our returning soldiers were treated as criminals. This poor treatment started long before Kerry spoke, so it is hard to blame it on him.

Yes, they were spat on and called "baby-killers". Kerry certainly intensified this feeling with his testimony that they were, indeed, baby-killers.

For your second point, logically it never made any sense for some veterans to take general comments and assume they were specific to them. In fact, Kerry was speaking in defense of the men fighting in Vietnam. That was Kerry's intent and I've never understood any other interpretation.


Suppose you are a man living in Detroit. I, who have just come from a stay in Detroit, testify before Congress - in public and on TV - that it a common practice for men in Detroit to rape their daughters, it just happens all the time and I have heard many stories confirming the routine nature of this abuse. I don't give any names or statistics.

Would you then say that "logically it makes no sense" for you to feel personally slandered by this testimony?
