They probably left out Iran-Contra in deference to President Reagan.

Please. That would hardly explain the disappearance of his entire Senate career at the convention. More likely, his Senate career was considered too dovish for the times and frankly not all that distinguished. I live in Massachusetts and Kerry is definitely not thought of as the Senator who gets things done on the Hill - that would be Teddy.

In the end, they probably decided to feature his military career because polls showed he was weak in that area. I think it is a mistake not to discuss the rest of his career, but I'm not running the campaign

I agree, but they pushed it to the point of absurdity. If you suggest that Kerry has no firm position on the handling of Iraq, or his foreign policy priorities sound a lot like those of Jimmy Carter, the answer was always "I saw combat in Vietnam! I got three Purple Hearts! So I know what I'm doing!".

I mean, it's not as if he really had a military career like Wes Clark, he collected his 3 PHs and left after only 4 months. Now if it turns out that he has been telling some fish stories about his service (do you still believe he spent Christmas in Cambodia? even the Kerry campaign has had to back off from that one), he's going to look like a laughingstock. The miles gloriosus (braggart soldier) has been a figure of fun since the comedies of Plautus.
