Don't believe everything you find on the Internet... didn't anyone tell you that?

It is very easy for you to say that. It's almost comical!

But let me say this. I was stationed in Thailand and I have often heard and read about atrocities committed by some US forces in neighbouring Vietnam.

I have also heard and read about acts of heroism of US fighters, serious US losses in battles and skirmishes, and terrible tortures of some US p.o.w.s. by their Vietnamese captors.

At that time it was hard for me to believe that US forces with far superior weapons and air power could lose even to ragtag teams of Vietnamese jungle fighters. Then it dawned on me that the Vietnamese were fighting with a fierce national zeal and determination to rid their country of
foreign troops. Also, the terrain and the climate favoured them greatly.

At that time it seemed to me that reports of US losses and cruelty to US p.o.w.s were calculated to induce Americans in the US and folks elsewhere in SE Asia to urge Johnson to sock it to the commies very much harder. Instead of giving full support for the war, the American public demanded an end to it.

Seems to me the Vietnam War was a war nobody wanted except for the hawks in the White House and at the Pentagon.

The story's from the Toledo Blade newspaper, and won a Pulitzer Prize for investigative journalism. Sorry it doesn't support your cherished misconceptions..
