It was a war of attrition, one that we could not win. If we had escalated (such as invading the North), we would have invited another Korea, with Chinese intervention.

The Vietnamese had been fighting invaders for centuries. Resistance is in their culture. They would have fought for many more years, if necessary. We backed the wrong side; the corrupt, non-idealistic side. We could not win, regardless of what happened at home.

We weren't there to help the French, we were there to 'stop the spread of Communism'.
