I doubt Catholics give a dam about Kerry's religion. My position , if you do not believe in the pope etc then why do you call yourself Catholic? If you are for late term abortion, communion after divorce, skip masses on Sunday. etc etc.. why not go to one of the churches that preach your beliefs. These Catholics are called cafeteria , pick from the menu. They don't follow church law they make up their own rules. I believe to them it more social , private schooling for kids etc.
I expect if they were brought up Catholic and now lapsed and democrat he gets their vote. If they follow the Church laws and attend mass on sunday they may vote against him.
But i think it is a small minority who attend church and follow church law on a regular bases.

i also think the bishops do not take a stronger stand on communion etc for fear of losing more parish members and their financial contributions. Great example of leadership in the church, turn the other cheek and hope this goes away.
