I break from most on the left (or is the right that opposes?) on this issue. The existence of a national ID card in itself is not a bad idea, IMHO. Of course, such a system could be abused, but wouldn't that be up and above merely the existance of this system? And, couldn't similar snooping exist without the existence of such a system?

EDIT: for example, it could be used to prevent something like this:
