One of the reasons Dole lost to Clinton was that Dole was regarded as a mean-spirited fella! Dole went on a 1 to 1 debate with Clinton hoping that the audience would sooner or later express outrage over his liaison with Monica Lewinski. But Clinton so wowed and charmed the audience that they did not bring that matter up. And Dole expressed his astonishment over this. By the way, Dole had, earlier on, hoped to get into Bush Sr.'s cabinet. But he was left out. The audience was clearly in support of Clinton throughout the meeting.
