Here are a few articles that will give you some information.

(I read a couple of months back that "somebody" has a piece of hardware that will transfer video tapes...not sure which formats it covers, directly to a CD/DVD. I can't find the item...yet.)

Larry, assuming your camcorder is analog [not DV], it probably has AV outputs. Check if your PC has AV input jacks. If yes, try it. I think Microsoft Media Player might accept this input. Not sure at all.
