Enlisted men, released from active duty, are required to serve in inactive reserve for a certain length of time depending on the needs and regulations of the DoD at the time. This not so for officers. They have, to my knowledge, no automatic release from Reserve Status. In my case, as an regular enlisted man, because I had three or more years in active service prior to Korea, and served during the Korean War, I was not required to serve any Reserve time after I completed the Truman year add on. as an aside, I had more hours in the air than Kerry had total on the ground.
