Snip> Analysts at Merrill Lynch said the valuation for Artisan "looks rich." In the year to the end of June, Artisan revenue totaled $82.9 million and profit of $17.3 million.

"We assume that ARM will be able to extract more revenues from Artisan's IP than Artisan could as a stand alone company," Merrill added. The terms set an enterprise value of about 8.9 times 2004 sales for Artisan, according to Lehman research. To compare, ARM shares set an enterprise value at 5.7 times sales.

"Strategically, it adds complimentary products and opens-up a larger addressable market for ARM, but the risk is that current ARM customers see the combined entity as competition," Lehman told clients.
