they like "being right" more than they like victory. LIke goldwater in 64 and mcgovern in 72 if you get my drift.

You could add Mondale to that list as well.

Nice posts. Even if we do disagree on who will make the better President. Yes, in some ways, Kerry "asked" for people like O'Neill to step forward. He didn't ask for bald lies and/or misleading characterizations of his record. But that is to be expected from groups like the Bush admin and O'Neill. I'm sure Kerry didn't expect it from Elliott, who had previously campaigned for him, but such is life in the politics, American-style, especially as refined by people like Ailes and Atwater back in the 80s (not that Democrats haven't done similar things in the past--the Daisy ad comes to mind--but Ailes and Atwater raised it to a new level of steady doses of grime placed at the very center of campaigns).

So next week, bush needs this to die down

It will. The RNC has already announced that they are going to talk about Bush's platform in the convention, as opposed to all the "reporting for duty" stuff in the democratic convention.

The Swiftvets will keep doing what they are doing, but it will get less attention.
