Kerry himself has stated that he was over the top in some of his post tour rhetoric. But then again, who wasn't? He was milder than most of the antiwar leadership.

So, the question becomes, do these experiences help or hurt him? I think you're right, but I'd say that they help him in the minds of his supporters, and hurt him in the minds of his detracters. So, a wash.

Agreed on the record. He actually has a pretty good record, but these things are hard to measure. Bills passed? More than a lot of senators. Impact? Always hard to measure. But, from a left POV, he fought for the traditional Democratic positions. His teaming with McCain on the MIA and vet issues should earn him some non-partisan points.
