Well, if the Democrats are swept into power this fall, will it really change the fundemental power structure of our government? Probably not. The War Party will still be in control. The weapons systems will still be funded. The military will still get its way. Clinton didn't change the military industrial complex much when he had a Democratic Congress in the early 1990s. Besides don't ask don't tell, it was pretty much business as usual under Clinton.

Kerry hasn't indicated that he intends to be a peace candidate at all. He proposes more troops for Iraq. He doesn't propose a major rebalancing of our military priorities. He actually came out against Bush's sensible idea to pull our troops out of a Cold War stance in Europe and Asia. Kerry is playing politics on that issue. The Democrats, out of fear of being called soft on defense, will not challenge the military industrial power structure in our economy and government. No matter who wins, it's 4 more years of war. I think only the Greens or Libertarians could shake things up in Washtington these days. There's just too many people with their hands in the defense till to make a difference working within the two major war parties.
