1.) Use our influence, $4 Billion worth, with Israel, to force them to settle with the Palestinians. The 9/11 attacks were first conceived by arabs angry at our support for Israel.
Discounting the fact that that is crap (OBL himself said it was because we had infidel soldiers on sacred Islamic soil, remember), not a bad idea. I've suggested it myself. Let's add teeth, though. How about an international coalition to guarantee borders and impose a settlement?

The 9/11 Commisson Report said that the 9/11 attacks were originally conceived by an arab extremist that was unhappy with our support for Israel. He didn't have the money or organization to carry out the attacks, so he turned to Bin Laden for help. True, Bin Laden was mainly angry about our presence in the "holy land". But, there's no doubt that solving the Israelie/Palestinian conflict would lessen the anger directed at us by the arab world, and would lessen our threat from terrorism.

2.) Do whatever we can to wean ourselves off Mid East oil. Sure, it was a pipe dream a decade ago. But, it's not any longer. The technologies are real and are being improved every year that could really alter our economy and end our oil dependence.

Well, there's not a whole slew of technologies that we could start using on a large scale to drastically reduce our dependence on foreign oil. From geothermal for heat and cooling (95% of new homes in Sweden come with geothermal) to hybrids or fuel cells for cars, to electric cars (not so wacky, there are technologies that could increase the range to 300 miles, see below), to wind/solar (coming down in price), to making our own oil from our very own garbage, to biofuels like ethanol and biodiesel. There's a lot we could do to lessen our dependence on Mid East oil. At this point it's just a matter of having the will as a nation to actually take the steps necessary to change the way we run our economy.
