As a % of oil consumption, gasoline demand from cars is far less than industrial/manufacturing consumption. Energy used for transportation is around 1/4 of industrial demand.

The affluent coastal cities may have a modest segment of the population able to buy cars and willing to pay whatever price for gasoline. But because most energy consumption is used by industry, it's easy to see how energy demand in China is more sensitive to recessionary forces.
