Amazing the difference in feedback today, isn't it? In Nam, you talked stateside at your level maybe once a year.

Not quite. In Nam we had SSB Radios (single side band) in all the A camps. It was for calling SFHQ in Nha Trang in emergencies. Using the HAM Network (which we were not supposed to do) and a proper antenna configuration, we could also call home. I called my wife and kids, once or twice, 5 clicks from the Cambodian/Laotian border. As well as from several other locations.

These guys had Sat phones, and I know damn well there was daily backchannel.

Exactly correct. The teams could talk directly to Qatar, Ft Bragg and/or Tampa. But the guys in the rear are loathe to initiate such a call unless they have something significant to offer. The nice thing now is the ease in using and the portability of the sat devices and little antennas and the encryption gear that makes normal voice commo possible.
