Before that happens, perhaps this merits posting over there:

Kerry's ad offense, truth first victim
By Boston Herald editorial staff
Tuesday, August 24, 2004

There's one candidate in the race for president running a false negative TV ad and, guess what, it's not George W. Bush.

Apparently John Kerry [related, bio] has decided that the best defense is a good offense when it comes to responding to allegations about his service in Vietnam. (Too bad, because it's a pretty good defense to have a senior Chicago Tribune editor who served with Kerry vouch for his courage in a much-covered Sunday column.)

But rather than dealing with the merits of the contentions of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth by releasing all of his military records, Kerry's running a response ad which accuses the president of breaking the law.

No, Kerry doesn't use those words, but that's the plain meaning of his assertion that Bush is behind the Swift Boat ads. It's a violation of federal election law for the Bush campaign to coordinate with so-called 527 organizations.

Kerry ought to pull the ad based on its truthfulness, but barring that unlikelihood, he ought to pull it because the president did what Kerry and Sen. John McCain asked him to - again - by saying the anti-Kerry ad, and all such ads, ought to stop.

``I don't think we ought to have 527s,'' Bush said, referring to the independent organizations pouring millions into the campaign, most of it against Bush. ``That means that ad and every other ad.''

He couldn't be much clearer and voters ought to appreciate that Bush didn't disingenuously denounce the content of the ad when campaign surrogate Bob Dole is doing the opposite (a la Kerry and retired Gen. Wesley Clark [related, bio] doing the one-two step on an ad about Bush's National Guard service.)

Assailing Dole's credibility - whose withered arm is proof enough of the action he saw in World War II - won't be easy, but that sure didn't stop The Boston Globe.

``Dole was given a Purple Heart for a leg scratch'' the Globe editorialized Sunday while raising questions about whether Dole's more serious injury was the result of a ``reckless'' move which may have endangered one of his men.

Let's hope John Kerry won't stoop as low as his media supporters.

The Swift Boat veterans have now launched a new ad focused on Kerry's anti-war activities.

The Bush campaign is starting an ad about Kerry's record on raising taxes - after running one on Kerry's intelligence oversight record.

Kerry is running the ``Bush smear'' campaign ad. Which candidate wants to stick to the issues, again?
