No. As Tim said, there are moderated threads with very small ban lists; he has one with none, I have one with one.

And then there are those with large lists. The largest belong to the political clubhouses; I have no problem with them. Then there are those that claim not to be but effectively are, and about those your are correct in saying " In no time at all you'll see that the "moderated" part is mostly just in case someone "else" comes to visit, about whom the moderator is dead set: their "kind" is not really needed."

LOL!!! Maybe on some other planet, but definitely NOT the case here on SI. Walk about a bit, on some of the "hot" threads:

I wasn't talking about the hot threads. I was talking about my threads, which are "here on SI".

That reminds me.

In case I haven't mentioned it, the new site won't make it possible to pre-emptively ban anyone. They have to post first.

And if a thread head wants to ban someone, they don't have to type in their alias and hope it's a unique one. They just click a link and the person is banned.

The inability to pre-emptively ban is one of the things that makes thread moderation more acceptable to me. Another is that there's now visibility to it (on the new version). Click a link and you can see who all has been banned.
