There isn't much difference between your post and mine except for the common sense definitions of "wound".

But I can tell you with the certainty that comes from speaking with many vets that Purple Hearts were awarded liberally. Ironically, Purple Hearts for minor injuries sustained before or after an engagement were easier to obtain than for serious injuries, which required much more detailed explanations. If a soldier required a few minutes for the medic to sew him up... OK... the CO would give him a medal. A soldier lost an arm? Wait a minute! What the hell happened!?
