Kerry signs stolen
Wednesday, June 23, 2004

Is this the end of democracy in America? Where has the right of political freedom gone when the vandals of our nation sneak into a Winchester neighborhood and steal political signs from Americans willing to show their colors?

I and two of my neighbors have had legal John Kerry for President political signs stolen from our property. It is the second time for me. This is not American. This is not democracy. This is a travesty of freedom, that over 827 young people have died for and over 5,000 more became maimed for life for. Some say that our soldiers are fighting to protect American values. Well, one of the most important values of America is the right to express our political views, my right to display a Kerry sign and my neighbor's right to display a Bush sign.

To deny someone this right is disgusting. If it was adults who did this, they should go to jail. If it was children, they should be given a thorough schooling in what patriotism and democracy really are, and perhaps a heavy fine given to their parents who might have instilled this kind of hooliganism in them.

I now have two Kerry signs on my lawn. If those are stolen, I will put up four. Hooliganism will not win in Winchester. You will see Kerry signs on my lawn every time you go by from now until Nov. 3, because that is my American right - and yours.

I support our troops who are fighting for our rights as Americans to disagree. I support them - not the way they are being used by this administration. I support them by putting up my sign and I will support your right to put up yours, for whichever candidate you choose.

Thomas Jefferson once said that dissent is the highest form of patriotism. Democracy. patriotism, and freedom are still alive in Winchester. I will do all that I can to keep it that way.

Ohio:
City vows to address sign thefts
UA for Kerry representatives urge police chief to speak out against 'harassment'
Thursday, August 12, 2004

With the campaign season heating up as the fall election approaches, theft and destruction of political signs has become a major issue, as evidenced by the growing number of residents who are reporting such incidents to police.

"We're hoping to get the message across that as we're coming into the political season, there are numerous candidate signs and they're being taken," said Upper Arlington Police Chief Dee Holcomb.

Holcomb on Aug. 9 met with representatives from UA for Kerry, a local group of residents supporting the Democratic presidential ticket.

In an Aug. 2 letter to city officials, the group urged Holcomb to speak out about sign stealing, which they claim "is just part of the ongoing harassment our supporters are enduring," as the Aug. 2 letter states. "Bumper stickers have been ripped from cars, windshields on three cars bearing the bumper stickers have been damaged, at least one car has been keyed, and just this weekend, a car fender bearing a UA for Kerry bumper sticker was bashed in."

The letter claims that these acts of vandalism have taken place "simply because we are exercising our first amendment rights and providing an alternative point of view traditionally not seen in Upper Arlington."

UA for Kerry representatives also claim in the letter that when members attempted to report missing signs to police in the past few weeks, officers said they had been instructed not to take reports of stolen signs but to simply make a note of the incidents.

Holcomb said the department has since altered its policy in light of the increasing number of UA for Kerry signs that have been reported stolen.

"At my direction, if somebody was coming in and saying their sign was stolen, we weren't taking reports because we get so many of them," he said. "But because they were targeting a particular group, we changed that."

Brandon Road resident Janie Hastie reported to police that two UA For Kerry signs were stolen from her home on July 31. Hastie said she believes the signs were stolen overnight.

When she discovered the signs missing, "I wasn't shocked, I was disappointed," she said. "Down the street the same thing had happened. It's happening all over town."

Am I surprised? Of course not, I live in N. Dallas, one of the most Republican neighborhoods of this city. The ratio of Bush to Kerry signs in my street is 5 to 1, and now it's actually 5 to none. I honestly don't know what to do. What's next, my car? Am I suppossed to be intimidated by this stuff? I can't believe I live in the most developed country in the world, and yet my boyfriend will still not put a sticker on his car supporting his political beliefs because of fear. Is this America?

This is a warning to the people who oppose George W. Bush and put up signs that say "Re-Defeat Bush" or "Vote for Kerry/Edwards."
You're potential targets of crime and are in grave danger of losing your freedom of speech.
The night of July 22, we learned the consequences of having such signs pinned on the railing of our front porch on Buttonwood Street. The signs had been stolen, and the push-pins that had kept them there since May were left on the sidewalk to pierce the feet of innocent passersby.
Stunned and horrified, we called the police. Unfortunately, we could not give the very cooperative police officer a description of the perpetrator as he or she acted, as most cowardly criminals do, in the dark of night.
However, we were able to identify the license plate number of a pick-up truck whose driver, earlier that day, drove by and shouted to us, "You Suck!" We also recalled the very pudgy middle finger of a man who drove by in a Mercedes one day last week.
As we provided the officer with the information he needed to file a report, we tried hard to ascertain a motive for this crime. Was it the act of someone who liked the signs so much he could not resist the urge to take them? Or was the thief someone who hated them so much he could not stand to see them? Or worse, did he hate us for having those signs in the first place, and was this just a warning he'd be coming back to commit more crime?
As bleeding-heart liberals who need to understand both sides, we could not rule out either profile.
After the officer left with his report in hand, we called the Democratic headquarters in Doylestown to see if we could get another Kerry/Edwards sign, and we learned the shipment of signs they'd gotten the day before already was sold out.
While that might have been good news to some people, it was an ominous sign to us the crime rate is about to skyrocket in Pennsylvania! And if some of those signs end up on the porches of Lambertville houses, besides the good news we'll be able to justify having 10 police officers in this little town, our crime stats could jeopardize our property values!
Take heed, neighbors who hang "Re-Defeat Bush" or "Kerry/Edwards" signs: Hang them high and out of reach of thieves. We must do our part to thwart the criminal instincts of those who prefer the likes of Bush/Cheney or those who would steal to show their support of Kerry/Edwards.
And if you should become a victim of the same sort of crime that befell us, please notify the police and demand they file a report. It's the right and American thing to do to protect our community and ourselves from people who would trespass on private property to deny us our freedom of speech.

Texas...another

Sign of election results?

I live in the 78209 ZIP code and I have had four Kerry-Edwards signs stolen from my front yard since the Democratic National Convention.

Why do Republicans fear free speech? Is this a signal that Republicans are going to steal the presidential election again?

I would like to ask whoever stole the Kerry sign from my yard last week: Was it your intent to steal my property, or was it my expression you were stealing?

I now live in a Republican area of Oklahoma. Luckily I am getting ready to move.
Somebody stole my John Kerry sign right out of my front yard. I heard on the news that there was a lot of that going on in my area. Even vandalism. But luckily I didn't have that happen. What is this world coming too?
I figure it was a bunch of kids. But their parents are more then likely Republican.
Maybe I should get an Anti Bush sign to put out there. Geesh..
