"Slowly I turn, and step by step." Another breach in the wall.
Finally figured it out

Details are important as that writer indicates.
I can correct his acronym definitions.

MSF means Mobile Strike Force not Mike Strike Force. The units were Mobile Strike Force or Mike Force. They were lead by Green Berets. Presently I have no information that either were on that operation. I do not believe they were.

RF/PF (Regional Force/Popular Force) was a different Org. It was a loosely organized local force used for local security. It may or may not have had advisors...but they would not have been Special Forces. Or at least I can say it would be the first instance that I know of.

I nearly executed an ambush on an RF/PF patrol at the base of the Dong BO mountains when I was liason to the Korean White Horse Regiment.

They were all almost in the kill zone when I noticed two were wearing American jungle hats.

(Durn...there is that hat thing again.)

I pulled the pin on a grenade and quickly yelled at them in Vietnamese. They pointed their weapons at the ground, looked our way and grinned. We talked for a few moments and learned they were going to set up their own ambush at a nearby known VC water hole.

I breathed deeply and have never forgotten that incident. 7 or 8 good men came within 2 or 3 steps of death and grinned about it.

The RF/PF most likely had RVN advisors and possibly an American or two. They most likely were ARVN Rangers with the three American advisors we read about. But, I also read they may have been Nungs (1/2 Chinese 1/2 vietnamese). In that case the advisors were probably SF.

Are you confused yet? Yes! Me too.
Good, I am ready to go have a drink.
