I think the link I posted might have just muddied the waters.

"During this time energy consumption in China and SE Asia fell from 10-15%"

The general point was that in these countries with a high % of energy consumption going to industry, a recession almost by definition involves a decrease in energy consumption.

Energy, not just oil. Interelated in that a more general fall in demand for energy translated into lower prices for oil.
