I keep hearing this from the Bush supporters: "It was John Kerry who decided to make his military service the centerpiece of his presidential campaign and Swift Boat Veterans for Truth will continue to take its message directly to the American people.''

I believe this is backwards. The SmearVets smear campaign was planned from the beginning, and Kerry got ahead of it by featuring his military career. If Kerry hadn't got ahead of this smear it would be much worse. Maybe I'm giving the Kerry campaign too much credit, but I knew this smear was coming early this year - the lies were already here on SI.
