A friend I went school with did his Nam tour and was back in the US doing his signing out. Some small kid in the housing area had found a grenade and he was sent to pick it up. When he got there the kid had pulled the pin, the spoon flew off. A year in combat without a scratch and then blown up with a day left in the service.

Cleland had already earned a Silver Star and a Bronze Star at the time of his injuries.
