Maybe. But according to the criteria for a Purple Heart, he was entitled to them. It looks as if you seek medical treatment for a wound and it is determined that it occured because of military action, then you get a Purple Heart.

As far as his 6 months being public knowledge, where is that? According to naval records, he served on the Gridley from June 1967 to June 1968. I think that is 12 months, but I am not sure...
