As to the dates of his two tours, I think the four months isn't in question. His book, Tour of Duty, states that he put in five months in '67 on the frigate USS Gridley with a brief stop in Vietnam. Giving him a month leaway, that seems like six months. I'm no expert on the subject, that's just what the book says.

On 10 February, 1968 Kerry requested swift boat duty in Vietnam. At the time of his letter, he had served seven months aboard the Gridley. He wanted to begin his swift boat training once the Gridley had returned to the US in June of 1968. That means he served on the Gridley for roughly 12 months.

Upon returning to the US, he was expected to do 9 weeks of swift boat training. Training commenced on 25 August, 1968 and was expected to take 9 weeks. Around the end of Oct./early November, Kerry was sent to Vietnam for assignment to a swift boat.
