I can only judge his actions. I don't see anything in his personal life that is grossly inconsistent with true piety, though I certainly don't think Bush is exactly an apostle either. As long as matters of faith will not get too much in the way, he will be a man of faith. But he is ever mindful of not allowing leftists too much legitimate ground to call him a "religious fundamentalist." He is really the right guy for the job in these times. Just faithful enough to put a brake on our slouch into Gomorah, but not so faithful that a faithless public would reject him out-of-hand.Was that just his way of leaving his troubled past behind him, or do you think it a was genuine spiritual awakening? I will have to take him at his word when he claims his awakening was genuine. Apparently he was on the edge there for a bit and now seems quite capable and strong, his political dealings notwithstanding. True faith can do this for a man when it is real. I have seen it for myself plenty of times. I believe him here. I completely reject Kerry here. Kerry's Catholicism is meaningless. Based upon his life and actions, it is clear to me that church for him is just a political prop. Where it demands something of him, church is to Kerry a drag at the very best.Though I am no one to judge, I always suspected that it was a crafty maneuver designed to shed the anchor of his not-so-laudable younger years. I don't think he needs faith to do this. He could easily have done what so many politicians have done here. Ted Kennedy hasn't run to religion to shed the anchor of his youthful indiscretions. I think Bush knows what it means to be in a dark place and be delivered from it. Perhaps the problem with him is that he sometimes too easily loses perspective and allows the game of politics to become too important in the big scheme. Perhaps I am wrong here. I find Bush intriguing. Generally, though I am no fan, and indeed am angered by the guy, I am convinced Bush is the best thing America has as leaders go. It is pathetic, I know. But it is the truth.does that makes me cynical...? heh No. You're a skeptic - like me. I think a cynic is a skeptic who has no self-respect. A cynic is a guy who is such a skeptic, he no longer believes that even the most fundamental virtues have innate value. You don't seem there yet. Hey, I am having a real hard time disliking you. So, you must be running something awful nice beneath the surface (grin). You're no cynic - yet.
