Was there a defining moment or event that propelled the protests There was a series of defining events, often accompanied by vivid imagery. My first awareness that we had a problem was the Vietnamese Buddhist monks torching themselves in 1963. Things went downhill from there... vietnampix.com Note: I was just a kid delivering newspapers then. It was shocking stuff to read about.
