I agree, how many Prius will be delivered (as a second or third car) vs. sub-$5000 cars as the Logan (aka X.90 project)http://www.renault.com/presse/detail.cfm?langue=2&id=7571&id_rub=261
project aimed at tripling car ownerhip in some countries
This file has some world figures

India and China also have released "modern design" car concepts rolling out the factories.

Prius, the bandaid wich give us an argument that we attempt to preserve the environment, while our car makers are running to saturate emerging markets.

X.90 project aims a production of 500K extra new vehicules in the 2006 horizon. An this is only one car maker.

If people started driving smaller cars instead of Humvees it would make a huge difference in oil consumption.

Instead of giving tax breaks for Humvees there should be a high tax for gas guzzlers and incentives for more efficient vehicles imo.

A little would go a long way and the effect would be more immediate that waiting for hydrogen which may not ever happen.
