The Cambodian Monarchy was taken down in a coup in 1970 and Nol Lon took over and basically declared war on the Communists in Cambodia. However it took 5 years for the Communists to succeed, and they succeeded in horrific fashion of course with major help from the NVA and VC. There were always major differences and conflicts between the Cambodian Communists and Vietnamese Communists. Those conflicts escalated to border skirmishes between the Cambodia-Vietnamese border in 1978 and 1979.
