That is a major oversight, as DaschlevThune, SDPolitics, and Sibby brought some accountability to the hugely pro-Daschle media in South Dakota, and have pushed story after story in front of readers. Right now these blogs are helping shame Daschle into additional debates with Thune, debates Daschle doesn't want after the clobbering he took in his first head-to-head with Thune. Blogging had indeed affected the presidential race with the John Kerry not-in-Cambodia and related stories, but if John Thune does indeed unseat Daschle, blogging will have had a major impact on that result.hughhewitt.com Daschle v. Reverses Earlier Refusal Last night we reported that the news director of a Sioux Falls news station openly confronted Daschle at one of his events and shamed into having a debate on their station. Since there was no debate scheduled for West River South Dakota, Thune planned a press conference today for 11:00 AM MST to call on Daschle for a West River debate. Lo and behold, at 10:32 AM, just before the press conference, the Daschle camp capitulated once again and agreed to accept a debate sponsored by Rapid City television station KEVN. The station originally wanted a public discussion with a live audience, but the Daschle camp complained about the lively audience at DakotaFest last week. We wouldn't want Daschle to have to leave the television studio bubble and actually be exposed to citizens as part of the democratic process or anything. The Thune camp added: Daschle still refuses to debates proposed by the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce, American Association of University Women of Rapid City, the Spearfish Chamber of Commerce, the South Dakota Trucking Association in Rapid City, KOTA-TV and KOTA-AM of Rapid City, and a series of weekly “Lincoln Douglas” style debates proposed by the Rapid City Journal. “I still challenge Senator Daschle to debate before a live audience such as the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce or Spearfish Chamber of Commerce where West River citizens can attend and hear the candidates in person,” Thune said. “What is Senator Daschle afraid of?” Well, he's afraid of the democratic process and his record being exposed. daschlevthune.typepad.com
