A third motive for this chicken-hawk nonsense is simple bullying. It was and is a thuggish attempt to silence opponents' arguments without dealing with them on the merits.

Most of the commentary on both sides of this question is just plain bullying, IMO.

As for the requirement for experience before judging, experience has its plusses and minuses. Experience enables one to put things into context via a profound knowledge of what is ordinary and customary. But experience risks being to close to the issue. Which is why it's nice when parties with different experience bases cooperate in analyzing the matter. Which will happen when hell freezes over.

A small anecdote on the subject of experience. I remember when my erstwhile husband volunteered for Viet Nam. He was an Air Force officer at the time. They sent him to Alaska instead. It seems that it was their custom to send volunteers elsewhere. Just like it was their custom to never assign airmen to specialties in which they had experience. If you were a baker, they made you a mechanic and visa versa. That was because they wanted their bakers and mechanics to know only what the Air Force chose to teach them about their specialty.
